Tummy Time for Newborns—Even When They Hate It!

Let’s face it: not all babies love tummy time at first. But here’s what I’ve learned and why it’s worth it—even if your little one fusses at the start!

Start Early, Stay Consistent

The earlier you begin, the easier it becomes. Just a few minutes each day, even with a fussy baby, will build their strength and confidence.

Try a Cozy Reclined Tummy Time

If your newborn hates it flat on the floor, start on your side or chest. Let them lie belly-down against you, reclined at an angle they find comfortable. They’ll feel your warmth, your heartbeat, and your love—making it a cozy, bonding moment.

Why It Matters

Tummy time strengthens baby’s neck, shoulders, and core, laying the foundation for future milestones like rolling, crawling, and sitting. It also helps prevent flat spots on their head.

A Comforting Reminder

If they fuss, know it’s normal. Stay patient and gentle. Over time, you’ll both find a rhythm. Your baby’s small efforts today lead to big leaps tomorrow!

4 Tips to Make Tummy Time Easier (Even When Baby Hates It)

1. Use a Rolled Blanket or Nursing Pillow

Placing a small rolled towel or nursing pillow under your baby’s chest can make tummy time more comfortable by elevating their upper body. This slight incline helps them lift their head more easily and reduces frustration.

2. Wait 20–30 Minutes After Feeding

To minimize spit-up and discomfort, wait about 20–30 minutes after feeding before starting tummy time. This allows your baby’s stomach to settle, making the experience more pleasant for both of you.

3. Incorporate Tummy Time into Daily Activities

Tummy time doesn’t have to be a separate activity. You can integrate it into daily routines by placing your baby on your chest while reclining, carrying them in a football hold, or laying them across your lap. These positions provide the benefits of tummy time while keeping your baby close and comforted.

4. Keep Sessions Short and Frequent

Start with brief sessions of 1–2 minutes, several times a day. As your baby becomes more comfortable, gradually increase the duration. Remember, quality over quantity—it’s better to have multiple short, positive experiences than one long, stressful one.

❤️

Every baby is unique, and it’s okay if tummy time doesn’t go perfectly every time. Celebrate small victories, stay consistent, and trust that with patience and love, your baby will grow stronger each day.
